Just over a month ago, the accomplishments of the Democratic Party in Chicago this week would have appeared improbable. However, within a matter of weeks, the party has replaced a faltering Joe Biden as its nominee, seamlessly appointed Kamala Harris as his undisputed successor, selected Tim Walz as her running mate, revitalized its campaign and financial resources, and positioned itself as a formidable contender against Donald Trump once more. To further enhance this momentum, Ms. Harris’s acceptance speech on Thursday concluded a convention week that was marked by fervor and dedication.
This sequence of events represents a classic example of political reinvention. Many within the party are left in a state of astonishment. Although they acted with urgency, those responsible for this transformation deserve the appreciation of millions, not only in the United States but beyond. The campaign has now achieved a remarkable launch, exceeding expectations given the circumstances. Nevertheless, this is merely the beginning. An election remains to be contested, one that will have significant implications for both America and the global landscape. The optimistic atmosphere in Chicago could quickly dissipate if Mr. Trump secures victory.
This week, Ms. Harris had two significant objectives. The first, which turned out to be the more straightforward of the two, was to unify the party and launch the campaign with a sense of energy and optimism. Throughout the week, this goal appeared achievable, albeit at the cost of sidelining some of the party’s staunchest pro-Palestinian advocates. The second, more challenging task was for the vice president to utilize her primetime address to convey her personal growth into a figure that Americans could envision as a viable presidential candidate and commander-in-chief.
She accomplished this as well, and with some margin to spare. There were moments of evident anxiety, serving as a poignant reminder of the rapid transformation in her life, which could soon position her as one of the most influential women globally. By choosing a serious tone over mere rhetoric, Ms. Harris demonstrated her understanding of the gravitas associated with the presidency. This also highlighted a stark contrast with Mr. Trump, whom she labeled as “an unserious man.”
In her address, she characterized herself as pragmatic and realistic, delivering a speech that was grounded rather than flamboyant. Her focus was on working- and middle-class constituents, steering clear of the union-centric rhetoric typical of Mr. Biden. She addressed key issues such as the cost of living, housing, and foreign policy, including Palestinian statehood, without attempting to reach for lofty oratorical heights. While she reflected on her personal journey and “unlikely paths,” Ms. Harris did not heavily emphasize identity politics. The most impactful part of her speech addressed the Republican threat to women’s reproductive rights. Overall, the tone was one of inclusivity and unity, sharply contrasting with Mr. Trump.
However, it is now essential for the Democrats to set aside the celebratory atmosphere and the Kamala-themed merchandise and move forward decisively. Ms. Harris must also advance, as this is her party now, distinct from Mr. Biden’s, the Obamas’, or the Clintons’. There has been a positive shift in the polls, and the convention may further enhance this momentum.
